, harry reid last night, late, apparently reached a zeal. he's got enough votes. they have enough democrats to do anything they want to. but apparently did he reach a deal because some -- he did reach a deal because some republicans were threatening to not make this go through. some speedbumps along the way and perhaps they would have to start their vacation late. nonetheless, $2 billion more for the federal government to buy cars to do that to. peter: do we think that's the end? will there be another $2 billion? gretchen: that's the $2 billion question. peter: is it going to continue if it's successful in the terms of the goal of 750,000 cars being purchased? will there be another billion, another $2 billion, anothe another $3 billion? gretchen: a lot of economists wonder whether or not this is a good program. is it taking demand from buying cars in the next one, two, three years? after you hand out money, du, people are going to buy cars. if you hand out $4,500 to somebody, they're going do it. will they go back and ask $2 billion more? this takes them through labor day. apparen

's health care plan, all of a sudden this is, as you just heard harry reid say, evil mongering. it does seem that there is kind of a double standard about what constitutes legitimate dissent. gretchen: so do you believe that these war protests potentially are still going on and the media is just not covering them, or is it both that they're not happening anymore because of the change in the white house and so the media is not covering them? >> first of all, a lot of the people who were most passionately against the war in the bush years are a bit quiet about it now. there was a convention about a week ago of people who were big fans of the dailycoast website which is a left wing website. a few years ago it was a hotbed of antiwar act vism. the war really animated this certain group of act vism. activism. there was a poll, what's your priority? one was health care two the environment, at the bottom named by just 1% was stopping the war in iraq and afghanistan so there's less of certainly of antiwar fervor. on the other hand, cindy sheehan, the woman made famous in 2005 when she camped outside

right, rick. let's talk a little bit about cash for clunkers. harry reid after a lunch he had yesterday with the president of the united states who was trying to rally support for health care, harry reid came out and said, you know, we've got the votes, we've got 60 votes and we will probably add $2 billion more before the senators head out. a lot of people have been talking about whether or not this made good sense, gave up to $4,500 for these clunkers. now there is news -- i kind of mentioned this yesterday. caulking to one of my car -- talking to one of my car dealer friends. that four of the top five cars that people are buying are made by foreign automakers. gretchen: yeah. as i mentioned, friends are in the car business. look at this list. number one, ford focus, number two, toyota corp corolla, honda civic, toyota prius, toyota camry. so had this whole cash for clunkers -- sorry, i can't say it without laughing. has it benefited foreign automakers when the whole point many of these foreign manufactured cars are actually manufactured in the united states in many different states a

measure which is require 51 votes to pass something in the senate. this is politically perilous. harry reid would have to lead that fight. the latest las vegas poll in the capers yesterday show him losing double digits to unknown prince. if he wants to lose next year, all he has to do is do something controversial like this muscling through the bill with 51 votes. brian: to the anger of many republicans. usually the ones who reach across the aisle first. here is what senator john mccain said first about the health care proposal as it stands. >> the president's numbers are falling about americans' confidence about his ability to address this issue and how he is addressing it now wouldn't it be a good idea with the republicans and democrats to sit down with the president. i think he would have to abandon the public option. brian: what about starting all over. remember he said i screwed up? would you think, aubrey that would be a catastrophic loss to start again? >> no. i i think that the time is now to have health care reform. i mean, this is not a new subject. it's been going on for yea

with the coop? >> to quote harry reid, call it whatever you want, it will be a single payer. max baucus said we will have a coop but it will do the same as a single payer to me, it's the same with the public option. it's obscuring what this really is. obviously we depend on what the details are. but a coop, a public option, single payer, nationalized health insurance, universal health care, socialized medicine, it's all the same and it confuses people. we don't want that. brian: no confusion there. i know where you stand. thanks for the insight. >> thank you. brian: 10 minutes before the top of the hour. eric: bud cans are hitting college campuses. is bud light sending the wreng message? brenda: the ways and means chairman founded anothe another $750,000 and forgot to report tax returns and eye few plots of land he has. that just happens. . eric: anheuser busch fan can. clad in the colors of 27 universities. parents and schools saying the marketing campaign is promoting more than beer. rather, it's encouraging bing drinking. joining us with more on the subject is dr. fields a member of the red
